Dexterity Gymnasts through to British Nationals

Northamptonshire Rhythmic Gymnastics Team win Gold at County Championships, then place for British Nationals

Gymnasts from Dexterity are celebrating a run of success at both a county and national competition level.

A squad of six, ‘Dexterity Bluebells’ saw their first success recently at the hotly-contested County Championships for Rhythmic Gymnastics, held at Weavers Sports Academy, Wellingborough. This saw the young gymnasts achieve Gold for their combined routine, which is a fast-paced, carefully choreographed arrangement of gymnastics and acrobatics in front of packed crowd and panel of judges.

This then saw the team competing at the National Rhythmic Open Apparatus seeding for 2019, in Stoke-On-Trent. This weekend-long event determines who then continues to the British National Championship events later in the summer. Bluebells again faced very high levels of competition from across the UK, finishing third in their class. They now continue to the next level.

Principal of Dexterity Rhythmic and Dance School, Estha Jones, was full of praise for Bluebells and the school’s other teams. “At this level, competition is intense and demanding, with the girls needing to put in an incredible effort and long hours. They have shown the dedication to succeed and it’s really paid off, I’m so proud of them”.

Gymnasts from Dexterity span the age range 4-16, with multiple teams and individual entries taking part in these and other events regionally and nationally. In the recent competitions Dexterity’s elite Junior team were also in action, winning Gold at the County Championships for the second year in a row and their youngest teams, Blossoms and Orchids also performed with great confidence and were able to chalk up valuable experience.

The gymnasts’ run of success continued in the most recent competition, held just last week, where the youngest member of the Bluebells team also qualified in the National Grades Finals.

Martial Arts expert Jock Hopson trains with Musokan

Students of local Martial Arts school Musokan, based in Great Houghton, recently joined two other local clubs (Kenmukan, Wolverton and Jinmukan, Wooton) for the opportunity to meet and train with Jock Hopson Sensei (Teacher), 7th-Dan master in the Japanese sword-based martial arts of Jodo, Iaido and Kendo. He is the only person in the UK to have achieved this status in all 3 arts and one of the only two in Europe.

Mr Hopson, who was born in Northampton, is a former Technical Director of the British Kendo Association, studied extensively in top Japanese Martial arts schools and was pivotal in introducing Jodo and Iaido to the UK over 40 years ago.

The head of Musokan Dojo (school), Xandy Sahla, attended with his students. “It was a unique opportunity for us to meet Jock Hopson Sensei. As one of the top Sensei in Europe for these disciplines, for our schools to train with him was an unforgettable experience.”

The sword-based martial arts have seen rapid growth in the UK and Europe in recent years. Jodo involves opponents using a short staff against a wooden sword, learning a complex series of attacks and defensive moves. Iaido uses traditional Japanese swords and focuses on the art of drawing, striking and replacing the sword in a series of fluid movements.

Following on from the success of the first training event, Xandy Sahla is keen to repeat the experience at his Dojo. “We now hope to make this a regular get-together, Kenmukan kindly hosted the first of these and Musokan is very pleased to host the second on the 28th of March.”

Dexterity Dancers Cast for Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet Tour

Dancers beat 1000 hopefuls across UK to perform in Matthew Bourne’s latest production

Students from Northamptonshire-based Dance School Dexterity have been cast for key roles for Matthew Bourne’s latest production, a modern retake of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet.

Described as a passionate and contemporary re-imagining of Shakespeare’s classic love story, the production will be travelling the length of country, with a 13 date UK tour commencing in May, including a four-week summer season at Sadler’s Wells in August.

Featuring Matthew Bourne’s trademark storytelling, the production will feature the finest emerging male and female dancers from around the UK. Three male students from Northamptonshire-based Dexterity Dance School have been selected and can be seen performing when the production reaches Northampton’s Derngate at the start of the tour in May.

The casting process began in April 2018, with a call-out for young dancers currently in training aged between 16 and 19, attracting over 1000 applications. Dexterity Principal, Estha Jones, is thrilled. “All three students have worked incredibly hard to achieve this and are extremely excited to be part of Matthew Bourne’s production. Having been with us for a number of years, they are already experienced on-stage performers and I know they will give their all to the show”.

Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet will be playing Tuesday 28 May to Saturday 1st June at the Royal and Derngate Theatre, Northampton. Tickets are on sale now.
